Hospice Shares Veterans' Stories and Gives Back

OHIO’S HOSPICE AMERICAN PRIDE

Sharing Veterans’ Stories and Giving Back

Veterans deserve to be recognized for their valor and celebrated for their service. American Pride, a program of Ohio’s Hospice, is dedicated to honoring veterans who are facing life-limiting illnesses.

Hospice care focuses on assuring quality of life for those with terminal illness or disease. Hospice services are provided in the home, nursing homes, assisted living, hospital and hospice house. The goal is to enable the hospice patient to remain in a comfortable and familiar environment and receive the services they need.

Ohio’s Hospice is an affiliation of not-for-profit hospices across. Each hospice members serves a local community. All of them share a commitment to superior care and superior services, and address the unique needs of Veterans with the unique services available through American Pride.

Veteran Carl Gill serves as the Director of Strategic Development for Ohio’s Hospice and leads the American Pride effort. Gill is interested in expanding American Pride outreach to nursing home facilities and involving local Veterans.

“The goal of American Pride is to help facilities address the needs of their Veteran clients and to help them honor their Veterans,” Gill explains. “We can help educate them and help them establish programs to assure Veterans receive their benefits, that staff receives special training for serving Veterans with PTSD, and more. We can help them develop events and honor ceremonies that are meaningful and healing for Veterans.” Participating facilities can earn various levels of certification for advancing through levels of training and additions of enhanced care.

As part of American Pride every Veteran is invited to participate in an honor ceremony. Veterans receive a special pin that has the words “American Pride.” Pinning’s are conducted by a Veteran volunteer. Upon completion of the pinning, Veteran volunteers salute the Veteran and thank them for their service.

American Pride is actively seeking more volunteers to help pin local Veterans and participate in American Pride ceremonies. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact the individual below who coordinates the American Pride program at your local Ohio’s Hospice affiliate.

More About American Pride

American Pride is a program dedicated to providing Veteran-centric care to Veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness. American Pride enables Ohio’s Hospice staff to accompany and guide Veterans and their families towards a more peaceful ending. We can help assure access to all the benefits to which a Veteran is eligible, provide spiritual support and address individual post-traumatic stress issues. We were among the first in the country to achieve national recognition from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and Department of Veterans Affairs as part of the We Honor Veterans program. Through participation in Honor Flight, Veteran pinning ceremonies and special observances and celebrations, we celebrate the lives of Veterans and honor their contributions to our country.
