Thornville AMVETS raises $45,000 for Fisher House

The Thornville AMVETS Post 51, along with the Ladies Auxiliary, the Sons of AMVETS, and the AMVETS Riders recently held a benefit for Fisher/Nightingale Houses; raising $45,464.

The Fisher House program provides a “home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes offer free, temporary lodging to military and veterans’ families, allowing them to be close to their loved ones during medical crisis.

There are over 70 Fisher houses located in the US, Germany, and United Kingdom. The AMVETS Post 51 supports the facility located on Wright-Patterson AFB. There are currently two houses at this location, with ground breaking on a third one.

AMVETS Post 51 has fundraisers throughout the year — ending with a golf tournament, Poker Run, silent and live auctions, and various raffles. This year a grand total of $45,464 was raised.

Christopher Stanley, executive director of the Dayton houses states that he is amazed and overwhelmed at the amount money that the Thornville AMVETS raises. This is the fourth year that he has attended the AMVETS fundraiser.

He recounted that the first year approximately $16,000 was raised, increased to over $25,000 in 2016; $32,000 in 2017; and now over $45,000 in 2018.

The Thornville AMVETS has raised so much money for the Dayton Fisher houses that two rooms will be named for the Post in the new House being built.
