New study shows that Gulf War-era

A new Pew research study found that Gulf War-era veterans (those who served from Aug. 1990 through the present) now account for the largest share of all U.S. veterans, having surpassed Vietnam-era veterans in 2016, according to the VA’s 2018 population model estimates. >>>>>> READ MORE

M.A.S.H. HONOR Greenhouse/Garden

M.A.S.H. (Military and Service Heroes) Pantry and Resource Center is addressing food security among veteran populations by establishing community gardens in 9 locations throughout central Ohio. These gardens and greenhouses will supply fresh food for thousands of veterans in need in Franklin, Delaware, Pickaway, Marion and Ross counties. Gardens are being established on private lands, at a school, on the grounds of the Chillicothe VA, at a Boy Scout camp, a horse farm and more. Find out how you can help this effort. Critical needs right now are seeds, gardens tools and soil.

TrucksForVets.org offers Commercial Drivers License Class A and B training, with expansion into warehouse training, logistics training, and many industries related to these fields such as refinery, factory, and specialized industry and rail in the future.

 

Thursdays through June 2021 - Veterans Experiencing Trauma Support Group, 1830 hours, 120 Springdale Ave., Wintersville (Old Bank Drive Thru next to church). If you are a male or female veteran of the US Armed Forces who is experiencing trauma as a result of your service, you are welcome to this proven, confidential, judgment-free, trauma healing care group. The faith-based program is designed to address the spiritual and moral wounds of military service. We have four leaders who are combat veterans that have used the tenets of this program to heal. Designated Saturdays, January - April - Free Equine Therapy Workshops for veterans  - These 1.5 hour workshops are offered on designated Saturday’s throughout the year and offered for FREE thanks to donors of our veterans scholarship program! Registration is required as seating is limited. Join other military veterans for this hands on workshop and come meet our healing horses.  Facilitated by our licensed and credentialed treatment team, Janna Le Tenhuisen, LISW-S and Michele Bolinger, Equine Specialist; learn how to care for them through grooming and mindfulness techniques. Gain knowledge on how they communicate and survive in the wild and within their herd. Experience powerful lessons through experiential learning activities.  The simple act of being in the presence of a horse can calm our minds, relieve stress & anxiety, help lower blood pressure, reduce the effects of trauma, reduce pain and more. Starting May 12 - The SAM Center offers a free 12 week group guitar instruction program presented by certified music therapist Brenda Wise. All veterans will receive a free guitar and accessory kit. This guitar instruction program is designed for veterans struggling with physical injuries, PTSD, and other emotional distress. This is a beginner guitar program and veterans are not expected to have any previous experience playing the guitar. May 1 -  Vets2Industry Virtual Military Spouse Networking Mixer, 1400-1700 via Zoom. Keynote speaker is Annie S. Brock and a panel that includes Doryce "Mia" Miller, Lindsay Helm, and Katie Eksten Gomez will kick-off the event. Networking to follow. This event is also open to veterans and transitioning service members, even if you are male. The topics and focus will be towards military spouses but this is still a great event to network and find either resources or possible employment. Sign up here!

 

May 15 - Freedom Cruis'n, 2nd Annual Lincoln Highway Cruise, starting at 1700 at Meyers Lake Plaza, Whipple Ave in Canton. Proceeds go to the SAM Center. Hosted by Operation Flags of Freedom. More info can be found by calling the SAM Center at 330.956.6162

 

May 17 - Staying Safe, Thriving through the Pandemic, virtual training, 1000 - noon, hosted by AG Dave Yost's Office. Event is to inform caregivers on scams and other elder abuse. Register here.

June 9 - Military Hire Defense Industry Virtual Job Fair, 1400-1700 hours, www.militaryhire.com to sign up.

 

June 12 - 1 Is Too Many PTSD Awareness Run, hosted by the Hopedale American Legion, 48225 Rabbit Road, Hopedale. Registration begins at 0800 hours and first rider out will be at 1030 hours. All proceeds will go to the 1 Is Too Many suicide prevention program. $20 per rider and $20 per passenger. Call 740-937-9995 for more information.

 

June 27 - Veterans Alternative Healthcare Summit, virtual event hosted by AMVETS, 0900-1800. FREE to veterans. The purpose of the conference is to inform veterans and their families on the potential benefits of medical cannabis and how they could potentially transition their experience in this expanding industry. July 12 - MASH Pantry and Resource Center Annual Golf Outing, OSU Scarlet and Gray Golf Courses, Columbus. Scarlet prices: $700 a team, $175 per golfer. Gray prices: $600 a team, $150 a golfer. Silent Auction, raffles, 50/50, food and more. Go to www.mashpantry.org/golf for more.
